Biography
Extensive ADR, business, and legal experience.
Jim has mediated, umpired, or arbitrated over 1,000 disputes involving commercial/industrial/public/residential construction, professional negligence, franchising, employment, debt, fatalities and serious injury, corporate dissolution, shareholder agreements, royalties, trusts, tenancy, insurance, industrial land sales, government contracts, fires, pipelines, municipal subdivision, petroleum/coal exploration & development rights, power purchase arrangements, and other matters.
He is a C. Med and C. Arb, has been President of the ADR Institute of Alberta, and is a Vice-President of the ADR Institute of Canada (2016 recipient of the Lionel J McGowan National Award of Excellence in Dispute Resolution). He is or has been on the ADR rosters of the Provincial Court, the General Insurance OmbudService, the Alberta Energy Regulator, the Canadian Transportation Agency, the Alberta New Home Warranty Program, and the AIT Alberta Bid Protest Panel. He was a member or chair of two Oil Sands Dispute Review Committees, and a member or chair of four NEB Pipeline Arbitration Committees. He was recently court-appointed as a Claims Officer in a CCAA matter.
Jim has been director of, EIG Ltd since 2005 and board Chair since 2009.
A lawyer for 44 years, Jim practiced civil litigation involving commercial and tort law at all court levels. He regularly attends and presents at continuing education courses.
