CLEARING THE FOG: PLAIN LANGUAGE WRITING
Studies repeatedly show what professional communicators have known for decades: the most concise, precise, credible, and intelligent-sounding documents are the ones written in plain language.
Plain language is not about dumbing down content. On the contrary, plain language is an approach to writing that makes even the most complex material—legal, judicial, financial, scientific, technical—easier for its intended audience to understand, use, remember, and comply with. This presentation explores why plain language matters, what it looks like, and how to get it.
Frances Peck, MA (English), Certified Professional Editor (Hon.), and partner with West Coast Editorial Associates, is an editor, writer, and instructor with over 25 years’ experience. As a plain language specialist, she has worked with clients from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors on a wide range of material — from investigative reports to annual reports, from decisions to policies, from websites to manuals. She teaches at the University of British Columbia and Douglas College, and gives workshops across Canada.
Frances is a co-author of the popular HyperGrammar website and the author of Peck’s English Pointers, a free collection of essays and quizzes available on the Language Portal of Canada. She is a long-time member of Editors Canada and PLAIN (Plain Language International).
